Desiderius was born in Obrege in the southern part of Aquitaine. He came from a wealthy family. His father came from Salvius of Albi ( the bishop of 574-584 testified Salvius of Albi should be a grandfather of Desiderius ). With his brothers Rusticus (later Bishop of Cahors ) and Syagrius (later Count of Albi ), he was educated at the court of the Frankish king Clotaire II. He held the office of Treasurer ( thesaurarius ), which he also kept under King Dagobert I.. After 630, the inhabitants of Cahors slew his brother Rusticus, he was consecrated bishop of Cahors. He founded near Cahors the monastery of St. Amant, which was later named after its founder St- Gery. After his death he was buried in the monastery he founded, his remains were later transferred to the Cathedral of Cahors.
