Didier Ratsiraka

Didier Ratsiraka (* November 4, 1936 in Vatomandry ) was from 1975 to 1993 and from 1997 to 2002 president of Madagascar.

Biography

Ratsiraka was 1972-1975 Foreign Minister Gabriel Ramanantsoa. Also known as " Red Admiral " is known, he was born in 1975 in a coup to power, built the following year, a socialist government and founded the party vanguard of the Malagasy Revolution ( FNDR ). In 1989 he changed the name of his party in Andry sy Rihana Enti - Manavotra an'i Madagasikara ( AREMA; pillar and foundation for the salvation of Madagascar ). When he lost in the 1993 elections against Albert Zafy, ended his autocratic government. Zafy was removed from office in 1996 and Ratsiraka reached his political comeback in the spring of 1997, when he won the presidential elections for AREMA against Zafy and Prime Minister Norbert Ratsirahonana.

For the 2001 elections he was come increasingly unpopular and lost very narrowly to Marc Ravalomanana. A ballot should make a final decision, but was canceled because Ravalomanana could prove that he had received about 50 % of the vote. Ratsiraka refused to recognize his defeat anyway. Towards the end of February, Ravalomanana control of the capital, Antananarivo, which has always been his base, but Ratsiraka controlled the majority of the provinces. Within months, however, Ravalomanana had won the upper hand in a fight and after Ratsiraka lost the support of many provinces, he fled on July 5 from the country. Ratsiraka now lives in exile in France in Neuilly -sur -Seine, near Paris.

Ratsiraka returned November 24, 2011 for the first time from his exile to Madagascar back to " work together on a solution to the crisis ".
