The Blight is an opera in three acts by Franz Schreker, who composed the music and the libretto. The plot is based on the play Hidalla or being and having (1904 ) by Frank Wedekind, and plays in Genoa the Renaissance period. The opera was premiered in 1918 at the Frankfurt Opera.

Action

Act I

First scene ( hall in the palace of Alviano Salvago, in which the same is assembled with the six Genoese nobles Guidobald, Menaldo, Michel Otto, Gonsalvo, Julian and Paolo ): Alviano Salvago is a young hunchbacked nobleman from Genoa, who if his deformity of love of women has forsworn. In the sea off the city he has built an artificial island called Elysium, in their secret cave Genoese nobles, headed by Count Tamare orgies celebrate with forcibly abducted peasant girl and kill the girl after that. The city is offset by the repeated disappearances of young girls in horror. Salvago itself, the island has not enter or participate in the orgies, and is ashamed of these atrocities. To stop the desecration of his dream place, he explains his six friends now that he intended to give the island the city the next day. All citizens of Genoa will be able to enter Elysium.

Scene Two ( The six nobles among themselves ): The six friends fear the discovery of their deeds and keep the plan Salvagos for a foolish endeavor. Await impatiently Count Tamare to find a way out, and discuss the hesitation of her assistant Pietro, mitzutun in the planned kidnapping of citizens daughter Ginevra Scotti. In the third scene Tamare is added, and tells of a beautiful woman unknown to him, in which he had fallen in love, as she drove by in a carriage her father to him.

Fourth scene ( nobles and Tamare, appearance Podestà Nardi with the senators, his wife and his daughter Carlotta Nardi, to Salvago and the notary ): The Gift of the island to be notarized, but at the request of citizens to only the Duke Adorno comply. Tamare recognizes in Carlotta 's wife, with whom he has fallen in love. In the interview, she rejects him.

Scene Five ( Martuccia and Pietro): Pietro argues with Salvagos Martuccia housekeeper, with whom he has an affair. With lies and good words he persuades her to hide kidnapped by him on behalf of Julian Ginevra Scotti in the palace of Salvago.

Scene Six ( Salvago and Carlotta ): Carlotta who has heart disease and paints, asks Salvago to stand for her model. She had to see the inside of a person in a position, and have often seen him in passing and recognize the beauty of his soul in Salvagos shape and finally painted. Only the face still lacks. Salvago finally agrees to visit her for a portrait in her studio.

Second Act

Agree first scene ( hall in the palace of Duke Adorno, Podestà and three senators ) The reluctance of Duke Adorno, the gift is disapproved by the Podestà and the senators.

Scene Two (Adorno and Tamare ) The Duke Antoniotto Adorno is the historic Antoniotto II modeled Adorno ( 1479-1528 ), who was from 1522 to 1527 Doge of the Republic of Genoa. Tamare reveals the secret of the island and the love grotto to Adorno, and asks him to stop the donation.

Scene Three ( After Between curtain and transformation: In the studio Carlotta, Carlotta and Salvago ) In the studio scene Salvago and Carlotta confess their love to each other.

Act Three

First to Twentieth scene ( Elysium ) Citizens of Genoa take possession of the island. Salvago stops at Podestà to Carlotta's hand. She answers evasively, and walks alone. In the cave she meets Tamare called the Salvago as the mastermind of the kidnapping. Salvago arrives and stabs Tamare. Carlotta wakes up and demands with their last breath after Tamare with which it combines to die. Salvago refuge in the highest despair.
