Diederich Hinrichsen

Diederich Hinrichsen ( born February 17, 1939 in Nuremberg, Germany) is a German mathematician. He is a scientist in the field of systems theory.

Life

Diederich Hinrichsen studied from 1958 to 1965 in Hamburg, mathematics, literature, philosophy and economics.

In 1966 he earned his doctorate at the University of Erlangen, under the direction of Heinz Bauer. His main field of research was at that time the abstract potential theory with particular emphasis on extensions of the Cauchy -Weil theorem on the Choquet boundary. After research stays in Paris and Hamburg, he moved to Havana, where he helped to build the Faculty of Mathematics. After an appeal to Bielefeld he became professor of mathematics at the University of Bremen.

Together with Hans W. Knobloch established Hinrichsen the areas of mathematical systems theory and control theory in Germany. He was the founding director of the Institute for Dynamic Systems at the University of Bremen with an emphasis on finite- and infinite-dimensional linear systems, stochastic dynamical systems and nonlinear dynamics. As head of the group of linear system theory, he managed along with Ludwig Arnold, Hans -Friedrich Münzner, Heinz- Otto Peitgen and Peter Richter, the Institute to establish itself internationally.

After his retirement in Germany, he now teaches at the University Carlos III in Madrid.
