Diego Ortiz

Diego Ortiz (* around 1510, according to other sources 1525 in Toledo, † 1570 in Naples) was a Spanish composer.

From 1553 on, he worked at the viceregal court in Naples. Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba appointed him his Kapellmeister (Maestro de Capilla ). Also under his successor Pedro de Ribera he Afán 1565 in this post detectable.

His publications consist of the collection of sacred music, the liber primus Musices (Venice 1565), and a treatise of particular value about playing the viola da gamba, the Tratado de Glosas sobre cláusulas y Otros Puntos en Generos de la Música de Violones (Rome 1553). This is a remarkable source of Renaissance ornamentation and improvised practice. His techniques led to the English divisions on a ground and the improvised viola bastarda style.
