Diego Siloe

Diego de Siloé (* 1495 in Burgos, † October 22, 1563 in Granada) was a Spanish architect and sculptor.

Life

Siloé was supposedly the son of a sculptor of French descent, Gil de Siloam, the last representative of the Gothic style in Spain, who died in 1500. He is considered one of the main representatives of the Plateresque style. Siloé visited Italy in his youth where he created around 1517 the Epiphanienalter Neapolitan convent of San Giovanni a Carbonnara. In 1523 he completed the " Escalera Dorada " ( the gilded staircase) in the Cathedral of Burgos.

The dome and Corinthian columns, which he designed for the Cathedral of Granada ( where he was in 1528 by Enrique de Egas successor ), show his familiarity with the Italian Renaissance architecture. He also built churches in Ubeda, Malaga and Guadix. Siloé had a lasting influence on the buildings in Granada and the sculpture in northern Spain.
