Dieter Lehnhoff

Dieter Lehnhoff (* 1955 in Guatemala City ) is a German composer, conductor and musicologist.

He was a pupil of Klaus Ager, Friedrich Heller, Gerhard Wimberger and Josef Maria Horváth in Salzburg. After studying music at the University Marroquin in Guatemala City, he was active as a conductor. He then studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, Conrad Bernier and Helmut Braunlich (composition), Donald Thulean (conducting ), Ruth Steiner, Cyrilla Barr, Emma Garmendia and Robert M. Stevenson ( musicology ). Here he completed the Master ( MA) and doctorate ( Ph.D.) with distinction ..

Called again to Guatemala, he founded several academic and musical institutions: the Musicological Institute of the Rafael Landívar University, he has been a professor since 1991, and the Music Department of the Del Valle University. At both universities he served as university music director for the design and development as well as the musical director of orchestras, choirs and chamber music ensembles. In 1996 and 1997 he called for the organization of two international youth orchestra festival the national movement of youth orchestra life, he could solidify as a member of the Culture Committee of the city. He was also chief conductor of the New Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the city of Guatemala and the National Choir, with numerous concert series. His research in the area of ​​older music brought many forgotten or lost Central American compositions from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century to the light receiving new life in concerts and recordings. From 2007 he was also the first guest conductor of the newly founded symphony orchestra of the University, with whom he performed contemporary works, including his first piano concerto.

His own compositions are in Europe, North and Latin America and was also listed in Asia. His Misa de San Isidro (2001) for unaccompanied mixed choir, the Pope John Paul II dedicated and was honored by him is, on Tenerife, (Canary Islands) premiered in 2002, and since then at festivals in Medellín (Colombia ), Tokyo and New York has been performed by various professional choirs. His Piano Concerto No. 1 (2005), dedicated to the Russian pianist and piano teacher Aleksandr Sklioutovski, was premiered in Guatemala City by José Pablo Quesada (Costa Rica) and the Millennium Orchestra under the baton of the composer. Other subsequent performances and concert recordings with the same soloists in Costa Rica ( National Theatre, 2007), Venezuela ( 15th Festival of Contemporary Music, Caracas, 2008) and El Salvador (13th Festival of Contemporary Music, 2009) brought the work more widely used. The Piano Concerto No. 2 Lehnhoff, also inspired by Sklioutovski, experienced its first performance in 2008 in the concert hall of Marroquin University in Guatemala City, with the soloist Sergio Sandi (Costa Rica ) and the Bach Ensemble Leipzig with the Millennium Orchestra, conducted by the composer. Both concerts are held in a personal post-modern style, with influences of modernity and the harmonic and rhythmic peculiarities of tango, jazz and blues. Lehnhoff four Hai -kai for piano, dedicated to his former teacher, Klaus Ager, are aphoristic pieces in twelve-tone technique, which have attracted the attention of Russian Musiktheoretikerin Tamara Sklioutovskaia and performed internationally. His orchestral, choral and chamber music comes at numerous international festivals hearing. His stage work Satuyé, a legend of the Caribbean and with own libretto in the language of the Garinagu, is soon to come to the performance.
