Dieter Pauly

Dieter Pauly ( born February 14, 1942 in Reydt, now a suburb of Mönchengladbach ) is a former German first division football referee.

Biography

After Pauly had already caught three years in the second division, he was appointed on 2 September 1980 by the DFB as a referee in the premier league. He became famous for the sports photo of the year 1981, showing him nose to nose with Toni Schumacher ( from the game between Borussia Dortmund and 1.FC Cologne on May 30, 1981).

Pauly whistled in 10 years from 1980 to 1990 exactly 100 games in the Bundesliga and the DFB first cup final in 1986 and had 65 international operations. During this time he was selected by the DFB in the years 1984/85, 1987/88 and 1989/90 Referee of the Year.

Pauly was also honored as the first DFB referee with a farewell match, which took place on the Bökelberg between Borussia Moenchengladbach on 21 August 1990 against Ajax Amsterdam.

In 2000, Pauly was elected to the UEFA Referee Committee for observers.
