Diethyl sulfide is a chemical compound selected from the group consisting of organic sulfides, and thioether.
Production and representation
Diethyl sulfide is obtained by the reaction of ethanol with concentrated sulfuric acid and partial neutralization of the resulting solution with sodium carbonate, followed by distilling off Natriumethylsulfat in a solution containing magnesium sulfide.
Properties
Diethyl sulfide is a flammable, volatile, colorless liquid with a garlic -like odor. Add water and heat it decomposes, with sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide produced.
Use
Diethyl sulfide is used as a solvent for minerals and coating baths of gold and silver.
Safety
The vapors of diethyl sulfide can combine with air to form an explosive mixture (flash point -10 ° C).
