Sports career

As a member of the East German Olympic team Dietmar Lorenz took in 1980 at the Summer Olympics in Moscow. These games were boycotted by some countries, so were missing, among other things, the Japanese Yasuhiro Yamashita with, the reigning world champion in the heavyweight division, and Sumio Endo, the world champion in the Open Class. First he fought in the light heavyweight and won the bronze medal. After that he went as an outsider in the " Open Class " at the start. To the surprise of all judo expert, he defeated the favored opponents and won the final fight against the twelve kilos heavier Angelo Parisi from France.

This Dietmar Lorenz went down in history as the first German Judo Olympic gold medalist. In addition, he is so far the first and only judoka, who succeeded to gain as light heavyweight in the " open class " the gold medal.
