Herrgottschnitzer is in the southern German and Austrian speaking country, the traditional name for a professional wood carver, draws mainly work with Christian religious motifs. The name goes back to the novel "The Herrgottschnitzer of Oberammergau " by Ludwig Ganghofer. In the Val Gardena -carving is from the 17th century in many families of the main branch.
