Diezma

Diezma is a municipality in Spain, in the province of Granada, about 40 km north-east of Granada.

Geography

The area is 42 km ². In Diezma live about 945 Diezmeros (Spanish inhabitants name).

Diezma is on 1233 meters above sea level near the highway between Guadix and Granada, and the most striking features of his village are the church of Santo Cristo de la Fe, with a tower in the Neo - Mudéjar style, and the residential palace of the Marquis of Diezma (18th century ). Outside the village a place called Los Banuelos should be mentioned, where the very popular with the locals hot springs forth, and the Cueva del Agua (Water Cave), a natural grotto with formations of stalactites and stalagmites.

History

Its name is related to the tithe ( Diezmos ) that were previously paid for the agricultural income to the church; the Arabs called him Dexme, certainly a derivation of the Visigoth town name. However, its history goes back to earlier times, because he was an enclave on the Roman Via Augusta, which combined with Acci Iliberis.

He was captured in 1490 by the Catholic Monarchs, and recognized as a homestead since 1530. The Crown of Castile sold it to Luis Guiral ( 1536), who took the title of Majoratsherren of Diezma.

Local specialties

Specialties are Rebhuhnschmorgerichte, venison and lamb roasts. Highly recommended are the so-called Rosquillos ( sprinkled with sugar rim pastries ), the homemade rice and of course gazpacho.
