Digby Island

Digby Iceland is an island in the Canadian province of British Columbia and is located in the Skeena - Queen Charlotte Regional District. It lies off the coast of Prince Rupert and is connected to the city by a ferry, and airport shuttle service. The island is located next to the small community of Dodge Cove and the Prince Rupert Airport.

History

There is a wealth of local stories in this area and many archaeological investigations were carried out over the years. In the bay itself Kanagatsiyot Dodge Cove, a village of the Tsimshian, a First Nations indigenous peoples group in Canada and North America is a tradition of several thousand years.

The name of the island

The island was built in 1867 by Henry Almarus Digby, a second lieutenant in the Royal Navy on HMS Malacca, named. 1912, a modern naval station and a magnificent residence with staff quarters, office buildings and shops, was built. These buildings still stand today and are private property.

Colonization in modern times

The first modern settlement of the island was held by Norwegian fishermen in the early 20th century. They named their village "Norwegian Village".

Economic Development

1912 now available only in ruins hospital was built on the island. After the boat building, who created here from 1919 to 1981 jobs by 1938, the cultivation of strawberries was an additional economic factor besides fishing. The Canadian television station CBC / Radio -Canada has built here in 1943 on the " CBC Hill " a booster station. In the early sixties, the Canadian government has decided to build the Prince Rupert Airport. The airport was opened in 1961.

Future Plans

There are plans to build a massive bridge between Digby Iceland and Prince Rupert. Whether this bridge is ever built, however, is questionable.
