DigiNotar

DigiNotar was a Dutch certificate authority. The company DigiNotar BV, founded by Dick Batenburg in Beverwijk 1997, specializing in services for notaries (including the Koninklijke Notariële Beroepsorganisatie ) and state public-key infrastructure in the Netherlands.

The company was acquired in January 2011 by the company VASCO Data Security International. Beginning of September 2011 it was announced that an attacker had illegally issued certificates for various domains ( uA google.com). These were demonstrably used for eavesdropping on Iranian citizens. The affected CAs were then removed from some browser and operating system manufacturers from their systems. This also legitimate certificates from DigiNotar will no longer be accepted as valid, which has serious consequences for the IT infrastructure, as DigiNotar certificates are used in the Netherlands for the state public-key infrastructure. On September 20, 2011 DigiNotar was declared bankrupt.
