Digitized Sky Survey

The Digitized Sky Survey (DSS ) is the digitized version of a photographic survey of the entire sky. It is based on the photographic plates of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey of the northern sky and the SERC / ESO survey for the southern sky. The images of the DSS are protected freely accessible via various data centers in the web, but copyright in FITS and GIF format.

The first version of the DSS was established in 1994 to 102 CDs released (DSS First Generation, compression, 1:10), from 1996 (DSS Second Generation ) started a second version in higher resolution (1 arcsecond per pixel), which is currently about a cover reaches 98 % in red, 99 % in the infrared and 45 % in the blue spectral range.
