Digitoxin is a steroidal glycoside from the group consisting of cardiac glycosides from the leaves of the foxglove Digitalis purpurea. Digitoxin consists of the aglycone digitoxigenin which is linked to three sugar residues ( digitoxose ). In its action it resembles digoxin from the foxglove Digitalis lanata, however, has resigned due to a missing OH group had a longer half-life of 6-8 days and is mainly via the liver.

Extraction

Digitoxin is derived from the leaves of the Red foxglove (Digitalis purpurea). From ten kilograms foxglove leaves six grams of digitoxin can be isolated.
