Diisononyl phthalate is a mixture of organic chemical compounds from the group of phthalates, which is used mainly as plasticizers. It is a colorless liquid with a very faint odor.

Note that ( for the most part isomers) is under the designation DINP or the CAS numbers due to the production of a mixture of esters of phthalic acid understood with slightly different type of branching of the alcohol groups. Under CAS 28553-12-0 is understood as a mixture with more than 50 % alkyl-substituted iso- nonyl but also iso- octyl and iso- decyl alcohols. In CAS 68515-48-0 the alcohol content consists only of the isomers of Dimethylheptanol. In its properties ( toxicologically ) both behave the same, however.

Production and representation

With isononylalcohol ( isononanol INA) is diisononylphthalate using a titanium catalyst by reacting phthalic anhydride produced.

Properties

Diisononyl phthalate has a viscosity of 72-82 mPa · s at 20 ° C.

Use

Diisononylphthalate is used as a plasticizer with low volatility and good low-temperature behavior ( 95% of them for PVC, the rest in rubber, paints, adhesives, coatings, sealants and solvents. ) It is similar concerning the molecular structure and chain length of the alcohols DEHP, but shows in many cases both in the manufacture and in the products of better properties.

Safety

Diisononylphthalate precaution may not be used in children's toys. According to the EU report, there is no evidence for acute hazards by DINP in humans, whereas Greenpeace refers to toxic effects in animal experiments without further reference.
