Dimethoxymethane, also known as methylal, is a clear, colorless, flammable liquid with a low boiling point, low viscosity and good solvent properties.
Production and representation
Methylal may be prepared by oxidation of methanol, or reaction of formaldehyde with methanol. In aqueous acids are hydrolyzed, thereby re-emerge formaldehyde and methanol.
Properties
Dimethoxymethane smells like chloroform and pungent tastes. Most organic solvents it is miscible.
Use
Methylal is used mainly as a solvent and in the production of perfumes, resins, paint removers and protective coatings.
