Dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate ( chlorthal-dimethyl ), is a chemical compound selected from the group of esters of dicarboxylic acids. Chlorthal -dimethyl is a pre-emergence herbicide which acts by inhibition of microtubules. The European Commission decided in 2009 not to include it in the list of authorized pesticide active ingredients. The sales period ended on 30 September 2010. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, no pesticide is approved, containing dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate.

Production and representation

Chlorthal-dimethyl can be obtained by reaction of terephthalic acid with thionyl chloride and methanol.
