Dimethylaminoethanol ( DMAE) is a monohydric primary alcohol, which still carries a dimethylamino group. It's about the choline ( the Trimethylethanolammonium cation ) are closely related to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. DMAE is a colorless to yellowish liquid of an amine-like odor. Aqueous solutions are basic.

Occurrence

As a metabolic product of the metabolism of choline dimethylaminoethanol occurs in many living things. Larger quantities can be found in fish ( sardines, salmon, anchovies ).

Production and representation

Dimethylaminoethanol can be synthesized by methylation of monoethanolamine. Technically, it is obtained by reacting dimethylamine with ethylene oxide ( BASF process ).

Use

Dimethylaminoethanol place as a means for dispersing pigments in water-based paints use. Furthermore, it is required as an intermediate or starting material for the preparation of dyestuffs, emulsifiers, corrosion inhibitors, textile auxiliaries, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

The dimethylaminoethanol are a number of positive effects, so among other nootropic effects have been alleged, but for which clear evidence is lacking. In Alzheimer's patients, no consistent results were observed.

Safety

As the tertiary amine dimethylaminoethanol is a strong base on which the caustic effect is based. It is only low acute toxicity (LD50 (rat, oral): 2.00 g / kg LD50 (rabbit, dermal): 1.37 g / kg).
