Dimitris Mitropanos

Dimitris Mitropanos (Greek: Δημήτρης Μητροπάνος, * April 2, 1948 in Trikala, Greece, † April 17, 2012 in Athens ) was a Greek singer.

His music direction was the so-called laiko. He has worked with Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, Stavros Xarchakos, Manos Hadjidakis and Thanos Mikroutsikos. Dimitris Mitropanos was regarded as one of the best musicians of Greek folk music since 1980.

Dimitris Mitropanos was born in 1948 in Agia Moni, a small town outside of Trikala. His mother was born in Trikala, his father from a small town near Karditsa. He grew up without a father, that he learned at the age of 29 years know. Up to the age of 16 he accepted that his father had come as a resistance fighter in the war died. By a letter he got the information that the father was alive and living in Romania. As a little boy he helped during the summer holidays from the local his family. How many children in Greece, he helped in operating the guests. Even before the end of school Mitropanos 1964 went to Athens. There he lived with an uncle in Odos Acharnon. He finished school and started working as a singer.

In the tavern of his uncle sang Grigoris Bithikotsis, then a star in Greece. Mitropanos and Bithikotsis became friends. About this friendship he learned many other singer of Greek popular music know. With Giorgos Zambeta was an intimate relationship. Mitropanos designated him as his second father. 1966 Mitropanos met for the first time on Mikis Theodorakis. He appeared in a series of concerts in Greece and Cyprus. In 1967 the first record Mitropanos ', on which the title Thessaloniki was included. Mitropanos appeared in the episode with almost all well-known Greek artists of folk music. Many of his songs are known throughout Greece and are often played at tourist folklore evenings. One of the most famous pieces is S'anazito sti thessaloniki from the 1980s. By 2011, published 45 albums of Mitropanos.

On April 17, 2012 Dimitris Mitropanos died in an Athens hospital of a heart attack.
