Dimitris Sioufas

Dimitris Sioufas (Greek Δημήτρης Σιούφας, born August 15, 1944 in Ellinopyrgos, Karditsa ) is a Greek lawyer and politician of the conservative New Democracy party ( New Democracy ). He has held multiple ministerial posts and was last 2007-2009 President of the Parliament.

Life

Sioufas has a degree in political science and public administration at the Panteion University of Athens and a law degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

He was first elected in 1981 in the Greek Parliament, and re-elected in all subsequent elections. He was from August 1991 to December 1992 Minister of Social Affairs and from December 1992 to October 1993 Minister of Health .. After the general election of 2004, which won the New Democracy party, Sioufas was on March 10, 2004 Development minister in the government of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis. He gave up this position on 19 September 2007 when he was appointed President of Parliament. This office he held again until the election in October 2009, when his party lost the majority.

Sioufas is since 1997 a member of the Central Committee of the New Democracy party, before he was the 1979 to 1985 and from 1994 until 1997. He was also a member of the Executive Committee from 1997 to 2001 and member of the Political Council of 2001 to March 2004. From April 2000 until Mar. 2004, he was general secretary of the parliamentary group of his party.

Sioufas is married with Kaity Anagnostaki and has two sons and a daughter.
