Dimitsana (Greek Δημητσάνα ( f sg ) ) is a village in the highlands of Arcadia, the Peloponnese, in Greece, with around 400 inhabitants. 1992-2010 made ​​it with some neighboring places the community Dimitsana. This municipality was merged on 1 January 2011 with seven other around the municipality Gortynia whose administrative headquarters Dimitsana in the eponymous district provides.

Geography

Dimitsana is 960-1080 meters above sea level in the mountains of Arcadia, above the Lousios Gorge. The village is situated on a saddle, once you pass the of the high plain of Megalopolis in the northern Peloponnese. Due to the altitude, it is not so hot in the summer, the resort and the surrounding area is therefore a popular destination for Greek tourists.

History

Dimitsana stands on the ruins of the ancient Tefthis, which was already mentioned in documents about the Trojan War. Dimitsana was first mentioned in 967 in a document. Also in the uprising in 1821 against the Ottoman Empire, the settlement played a role.

Attractions

In Dimitsana there is an open air museum on the use of hydropower, a museum of sacred art and a library of writings from the 14th century. The location of the village itself is also an attraction. The Lousios ravine with walking trails to the rock monasteries Prodromou and Philosophou is also one of the attractions.
