Dink Johnson

Dink Johnson ( born October 28, 1892 as Ollie Johnson in Biloxi, Mississippi, † November 29, 1954 in Portland, Oregon ) was an American jazz musician who played drums, clarinet and piano in Dixieland style.

Life

Johnson, the brother of jazz bassist Bill Johnson, went in 1911 with the original Creole Orchestra, in which Freddie Keppard played, as a percussionist and pianist on tour to Los Angeles. In 1913 he left the orchestra in California, there to play with Jelly Roll Morton before, after he had learned the clarinet in 1917, founded his own band, which, in the Six also played Louisiana Kid Ory.

Later, he played clarinet with Kid Ory and participated in the first shots of a colorful New Orleans Band in 1921. After that, he lived in Los Angeles and was only in 1945 'rediscovered' by William Russell, when he played in his bar piano. This led to solo recordings and those with a trio (1947 ) and partly with their own trick - percussion accompaniment.

Johnson, who died in 1954, was considered a very good ragtime player who oriented his style on the piano at his mentor Morton.
