Diodorus of Tarsus

Diodorus of Tarsus (* in Antioch; † before 394 ) was a presbyter and bishop of the 4th century.

Life

He studied philosophy in Athens together with his friend Basil of Caesarea. In Antioch, he was known for his adherence to Orthodoxy, while in his city ruled Arian bishops. After the decline of the School of Antioch he founded in the mid-4th century, a monastery-like community. In the year 378 Diodorus left Antioch to become a bishop in Tarsus.

His pupil Theodore of Mopsuestia was rector of the school of Antioch. Theodore and Diodorus were opponents of the heresy of Apollinaris. As the founder of the cosmological proof of God Diodorus has significance for the history of dogma.

449 his writings at the Synod of Constantinople Opel were convicted because they saw him as a precursor of the heretic Nestorius.
