Diogo Rodrigues

Diogo Rodrigues de Azevedo, also Rodriguez or Roys (* after 1500 in Portugal, † April 21, 1577 in Goa, India) was a Portuguese navigator, explorer and colonizer in India.

Life

Diogo Rodrigues took the helm with the fleet Pedro Mascarenhas to India. They sailed from the Cape of Good Hope eastward in little-known waters, the new route to Goa. 1538 discovered Rodrigues at such a journey along the the Mascarene Islands, named after him, Rodrigues Island.

Rodrigues remained Later in India, learned the local language, was the commander of the fort of Goa and Governor of Salsette Island (later Mumbai). Also in defense of the fort Diu under João de Castro and whose reconstruction he was involved. In the course of the Christianization of Goa in 1567 he let destroy Hindu temples and pagodas nine. The inscription on his grave stone in Goa: This is Diogo Rodrigues, ( called ) "o do forte - the out of the fort ," captain of the fort, destroyed the pagodas of this territory. He died on 21 April 1577.
