Dion Phaneuf

Dion Phaneuf ( born April 10, 1985 in Edmonton, Alberta ) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who is since January 2010 the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League contract.

Career

Dion Phaneuf began his career as a hockey player with the Red Deer Rebels, for which he was active from 2001 to 2005 in the Canadian junior Western Hockey League. There he was one of the best players in the entire Canadian Hockey League, in their first All-Star team, he was elected in his last two years with the Rebels as well as in the First All-Star Team of the WHL Eastern Conference. He also twice won the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the best defender of the WHL. During this period, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 2003 in the first round as a whole eighth player from the Calgary Flames.

In the season 2005/ 06 the defender completed his rookie year in the National Hockey League for the Flames, for which he in 82 games in the regular season to 49 points, including 20 goals, came. Thus he was the first rookie defenseman Brian Leetch by 1989/90 and Barry Beck, who broke the 20 goal mark. In the playoffs, he also gave another assist of in seven games. At the end of the season he was rewarded with the election to the NHL All- Rookie Team.

In the years 2006-2009 Phaneuf was among the top performers of the Calgary Flames, with whom he was able to qualify each time for the playoffs for the Stanley Cup. In 2008 he was elected to the NHL First All -Star Team. After the 2009/10 season started again in Calgary, the Left shooter was released on 31 January 2010, together with Fredrik Sjöström and Keith Aulie in exchange for Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Ian White and Jamal Mayers to the Toronto Maple Leafs. For the team from Ontario the 2007 World Champion scored on 7 April 2010 against Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers scored his first goal for Toronto in the NHL. Since July 14, 2010 Phaneuf is captain of the Maple Leafs.

Phaneuf is one of the best defenders in the NHL. He is also known for his physical game and sometimes hard checks, particularly because of its so-called open -ice hits.

Internationally

For Canada Phaneuf took part in the U20 World Junior Championships in 2004 and 2005. After winning first, 2004, the silver medal and was elected to the All- Star team, he won a year later, in the final. At the end of the tournament, he was named best defender.

He also ran for his country at the 2007 World Championships, where he once again became World Champion with Canada.

Life

In July 2013 Phaneuf married to Canadian actress Elisha Cuthbert, who was best known for the role of Kim Bauer in the television series 24. With her he had become engaged the previous year.
