Dionigi Tettamanzi

Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi ( born March 14, 1934 in Renate, Province of Monza and Brianza, Italy) is a retired Archbishop of Milan.

Life

Dionigi Tettamanzi entered the diocesan seminary of Seveso at the age of eleven years. Subsequently, he attended the seminary of Venegono, where he obtained the licentiate in Catholic Theology in 1957. On June 28 of the same year he received for the Archdiocese of Milan the sacrament of ordination by the Archbishop Giovanni Battista Montini Pope and later. After further years of study he received his doctorate at the Pontifical Gregorian University. In the aftermath Tettamanzi was more than twenty years professor of fundamental theology at various seminars and universities, and has published numerous books.

In addition, he was a regular contributor for the newspapers " Avvenire " and " L' Osservatore Romano ". He always took the view that the church must be close to the people and to current debates must not shirk, which is why he regularly attended meetings and retreats and over again also appeared in television programs. This was his special interest focus family issues. In addition Tettamanzi worked alongside his teaching activities as a church pastor.

In 1987 he was appointed rector of the Pontifical Lombard Seminary. On July 1, 1989, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Ancona - Osimo. He received his episcopal consecration Carlo Maria Cardinal Martini, on 23 September of the same year. Only two years later, he resigned from this post and took over the job of Secretary General of the Italian Episcopal Conference. John Paul II appointed him on 20 April 1995 as Archbishop of Genoa and took him on 21 February 1998 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Ambrogio e Carlo in the College of Cardinals to. On 11 July 2002 he was appointed Archbishop of Milan. Pope Benedict XVI. adopted on 28 June 2011 will be on the grounds of age pre- mounted resignation. He was succeeded by Angelo Scola.

On July 24, 2012, he was named Benedict XVI. Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Vigevano. He retained this office until the inauguration ( enthronement ) by Maurizio Gervasoni as Bishop of Vigevano on 5 October 2013.

Tettamanzi was a participant at the conclave in 2005 and was until the election of Benedict XVI. to the public as papabile, that as one of the possible successor to the late Pope John Paul II. He took after the resignation of Benedict XVI. the conclave in 2013 in part.
