Dionysius the Areopagite

Dionysius the Areopagite ( Greek Διονύσιος ὁ Ἀρεοπαγίτης ) is the name of one of Paul's converts in Athens assessor of the Areopagus; he later became the first bishop of Athens. The former handed Acts 17:34 ELB, the latter Eusebius of Caesarea ( Historia Ecclesiae 3.4 ).

An acting around the year 500 anonymous philosopher and theologian took the name and identity of this Athenian Areopagite claim for themselves. He is usually referred to as Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite. In the Middle Ages was equated following Hilduin of Saint -Denis, Dionysius of Paris ( 3rd century ) with the Athenian bishop.

According to Dionysius the Areopagite, the Catholic Cathedral of Athens is named.

The Catholic and Orthodox Churches celebrate his commemoration on October 3.
