Diophantus (crater)

17:57

Diophantus is an impact crater on the moon northwestern front, on the western edge of Mare Imbrium. It is located south of Delisle and northwest of Euler.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Greek mathematician Diophantus of Alexandria.

In the north and north-east of Diophantus are the four small craters Samir, Louise, Isabel and Walter. The roll-call name of this crater was not originally intended as official. It was taken along with other unofficial designations small surface structures from the Topophotomap Maps by NASA by the IAU in 1976. They appear with this name on Topophotomap 39B2/S1 ( Samir ).

The name itself will appear in a list as crater names provided for male and female first names in the Proceedings of the 16th General Assembly of the IAU (Grenoble 1976).
