Dipylon inscription

The Dipylon jug is an archaeological find, which was found at the Dipylon Gate, the main gate of ancient Athens in a nearby burial ground. The jug ( amphora ) dates from about the year 740 BC and possibly the oldest Greek inscription.

The inscription starts right beside the handle, running towards the left and reads:

On the pot a round dance and the game is presented with a Phorminx. It has a height of 22.5 centimeters. In research, it is debatable whether the pitcher or the Nestor cup was described by the ancient Greek inscription, but it is the oldest inscription found in the Greek motherland this Article
