Diquat dibromide is a heterocyclic organic compound from the class of bipyridines, which is used as a quick-acting contact herbicide. It is a colorless to pale yellow powder.
Production and representation
By oxidative coupling of pyridine over a Raney nickel catalyst, this is converted to 2,2 '-bipyridine. The ethylene bridge in diquat dibromide is then formed by 1,2- dibromoethane:
Use
Diquat dibromide is a 1957 by ICI ( now Syngenta ) introduced a contact herbicide, is used against weeds and acts by inhibiting photosynthesis. However, it is particularly suitable for killing potato vines before harvest ( desiccant ). The application of the compound is restricted to a few cases in Germany (potatoes, hops ). An application in nature reserves and national parks is prohibited ( the substance is considered to be particularly dangerous to bees and aquatic organisms).
Safety
Diquat dibromide is highly toxic.
