Dired

Dired (of English. Directory editor) is a free file manager. The program was the first visual directory editor (English directory editor). The usage is similar to other text-based file managers such as the Midnight Commander.

Dired was developed around 1974 by Stan Ball B. at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL ) (Stanford University) as a stand-alone program for the PDP -10 computer.

A somewhat more recent program that was written in 1980 by Jay Lepreau for BSD, bears the same name. Richard Stallman has implemented it as a script for the Emacs text editor ( and relatives ). Furthermore, it has been reconstructed for other systems and has programs such as ded inspired and served as the basis for modern window - oriented directory views.
