Station and Disentis Abbey

Disentis / Muster ( German Disentis Muster Romansh [ muʃte ː ] / i;? Since 1963 Disentis / Muster the official name ) is a municipality in the district Surselva the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland and the capital of the circle Cadi / Disentis.

Place name

Disentis is derived from Desertina ( wasteland ), the Romanesque Muster from the Latin monasterium (monastery).

Geography

The winter sports resort and spa is located in the Cadi in the upper part of the Surselva, at the confluence of the Rhine Medelser with the Anterior Rhine. The municipality consists of the villages Segnas, Mompé Medel and Cavardiras.

History

Beginning of the 8th century, built the monk Sigisbert from a Burgundian monastery a cell in the " Desertina ". The native Rätier Placidus helped him and was killed on the instructions of the sovereign. To 720/750 Bishop Ursicin built over the tombs of the saints Sigisbert and Placidus a monastery according to the rules of Saint Benedict. 940 the monastery was with his valuable works of art of the Saracens destroyed by fire ( Ceiling fresco in the monastery church). The returning after fleeing monks built the abbey again. Their main function was then from the " guardians of the Lukmanier pass " through which the German Emperor Otto I, Henry II, Emperor Frederick I ( Barbarossa ) and Sigismund traveled to their Italian kingdom parts. End of the 17th century a new monastery and from 1696 to 1712, the monastery church of St. Martin was built in the baroque style with two towers, designed by Caspar Moosbrugger. 1799 French troops put the village of Disentis Monastery and church on fire, after the population had risen against the occupiers. End of the 19th century, the monastery was restored. Since 1880 the monastery leads a gymnasium with monks as teachers. By 2002, remained Disentis of Court of the Cadi, the upper part of the Grisons Oberland.

Tourism

On the grounds of the ruined castle Caschliun the doctor Augustin Condrau built in 1877 the hotel " Disentis yard ", the radon source S. Placidus used from 1909.
