Disk II

The Disk II was a 5 ¼ - inch floppy disk drive, which was developed by Steve Wozniak and manufactured by Apple Computer. The instrument first appeared in 1978 on the market at a price of U.S. $ 495 pre-orders, later it was sold for $ 595 along with the controller card and appropriate cables. The disc is designed II II computer as a drive for the Apple whereby the slower tape drive for data storage has been removed.

The normal storage capacity per disk side was 114 KB to the Apple operating system (Apple DOS) DOS 3.2.1, or 140 KB with the 1980 released DOS 3.3 and later ProDOS. The write and read access was only on one side. The back of the disk could only be used if the disk turned and provided with a second notch was writing (for example, a floppy Locher ). (Doubling the storage capacity, but not simultaneously)

Apple changed later, the design of the drive to make it better suited to the housing of the Apple IIe and offered under the name DuoDisk also a version with two drives in one chassis.
