Distichia

As Distichiasis ( from Greek: δι - = two, στίχος = row, line) is called a disease of the eyes in humans or animals, in fine, eyelash -like hairs from the sebaceous glands (more precisely, the meibomian glands ) of the lid margin out towards the eyeball grow, creating a trichiasis, ie irritation and damage to the cornea can occur. The hairs are referred to as Distichien and usually grow out of the glandular openings. They thus represent a kind of second row of eyelashes.

The disease can occur both on the upper and the lower eyelid and may affect one or both eyes. In more severe complaints causing the hairs can be removed surgically.
