Distributed Component Object Model

The Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) is an object-oriented RPC system based on the standard DCE. It has been defined by Microsoft, COM technology to allow the communication via a computer network.

A former name is "Network OLE ". Based on the two names can be the origin of this Protocol recognize. It is an extension of the pre-existing interface definitions COM or OLE Networks.

DCOM was indeed developed by Microsoft and is there also mainly used (for example, ActiveX), but there are also different adapters to communicate via DCOM protocol without using Microsoft's DCOM implementation directly.

As an example here would be JCOM to call, which provides an interface between Java and DCOM.

DCOM can be encapsulated through. NET Remoting Services and Enterprise Services. But DCOM is still for compatibility part of Windows. Windows Communication Foundation ( WCF short, formerly known as Indigo ) is the new technology for distributed applications by Microsoft and part of. NET Framework 3.0. WCF unifies the three remote -call technologies of the NET Frameworks:. Enterprise Services, Remoting and Web services. In Windows Vista it is available per se and can be installed on Windows XP.
