District Municipality of Muskoka

The Muskoka District Municipality is a Regional Municipality (Regional municipality ) in the center of the Canadian province of Ontario. The capital and seat of the Regional Council is Bracebridge. The population is 58,047 (2011), the area of ​​3937.76 km ², which corresponds to a population density of 14.7 inhabitants per km ².

The district was created on 1 January 1971. To the west it borders on the Georgian Bay of Lake Huron, in the east on Algonquin Park and Haliburton County. From Toronto there are over Highway 400 and Highway 11 about 150 km.

The area is known for tourism and serves as a weekend destination for many city dwellers. It is crossed by weekend houses (cottages ) and lodges. In the summer months the number of visitors rises steeply and often exceeds many times the number of permanent residents. Leisure travelers appreciate the nature and the many lakes.
