District of Franklin

The Franklin District (English District of Franklin ) was a former administrative unit of the Canadian Northwest Territories. The district was in the Canadian Arctic archipelago of the Arctic Ocean and consisted of Ellesmere Island, the northern Queen Elizabeth Islands and the more southerly Parry Islands.

For district included the Melville and Boothia peninsulas on the Canadian mainland. The English navigator Martin Frobisher and Henry Hudson were the first known Europeans who visited this northern Canadian islands. The area was in 1894 transferred from the British colonial administration in the Canadian self-government.

Together with the Keewatin District and the Mackenzie District formed the Franklin District of the former Northwest Territories of Canada ( until 1870: Northwest Territory), to the creation of the territory of Nunavut in 1999 Here, the Franklin District between the Northwest was. territories and Nunavut divided. The Victoria Island was divided so that 2/3 fell to the new territory and third remained with the Northwest Territories. The responsibility for other islands was divided to allow the Inuit an independent territory.
