District of Keewatin

The Keewatin District (English District of Keewatin ) was initially a Canadian territory, and in 1905 a district within the Northwest Territories until the creation of Nunavut in 1999, is one of the the area today. Parts of the historic Keewatin can now be found as Kivalliq region in Nunavut.

1869 bought the Canadian federal government of the Hudson 's Bay Company from their territories and incorporated it in 1870 with the Manitoba Act in their federal territory a. With the Manitoba Act, the new province of Manitoba, by far the greater part but was initially co-managed by its capital Winnipeg as Northwest Territories came into being. With the Keewatin Act of 12 April 1876, the territory of Keewatin was cleaved from the Northwest Territories and also managed by Winnipeg from.

The new territory included the first modern areas of a large part of Manitoba, the Northwest Ontario and southern Nunavut. 1881 were parts of Keewatin to Manitoba, 1889 further to Ontario, 1905, the rest of Keewatin was incorporated as a district again in the Northwest Territories. In 1912 another area delivery to Manitoba and Ontario.

In 1999, the new territory of Nunavut was split from the Northwest Territories, and with it the hitherto remaining part of the district of Keewatin.
