Districts of Ethiopia

A Woreda ( Amharic ወረዳ wäräda ) is an administrative district in Ethiopia, compared to a district.

A Woreda ( district to German ) consists of several kebeles, or neighborhood associations, which form the smallest unit of local government in Ethiopia. Woredas are usually grouped into zones, which are a form of regional government; some woredas belong to any zone, this work autonomously. There are around 550 woredas in Ethiopia.

Some woredas based on a foundation of earlier times, such as the woredas Yem, Gera and Goma. They formed boundaries of kingdoms that are now part of Ethiopia. Former provinces of Ethiopia were also divided into woredas. However, many woredas are more recent. From 2002 onwards, the individual woredas of the government were given more authority, staff and budget.
