Districts of Sri Lanka

The provinces of Sri Lanka are divided into 25 districts. Each district is headed by a district secretary. The districts of the country - broken down by provinces - listed below.

The Sinhala majority population also uses the name Disa for the Districts. The original meaning of the name was the principality. The most important of these were disas Matale and Uva.

Each district is divided into ' divisions '. These were originally feudal domains, such as the German counties. The traditional divisions were designated korale and rata. During the British colonial period, they were initially identified as ' DRO Divisions ' means. My manager was the ' Divisional Revenue Officer '. Later, these were designated ' Assistant Government Agents ' and the Divisions were as ' AGA Divisions ' titled. Today, by a ' Divisional Secretary'geleitet and therefore ' DS Divisions ' called. Rural D. S. Divisions are now ( ' Pradeshiya Sabha ' in Sinhala ) managed by an elected Regional Council.
