Divorce demography

The divorce rate ( anglicism eigtl divorce rate ) is the ratio between divorces and marriages. One must always distinguish between the two calculation methods: 1 Man sets all marriages and all divorces in a given period in relation or second one sets the closed in a certain period of marriages and divorces in only their ratio.

The divorce rate has increased dramatically in Western societies in the 20th century.

As is clear from the statistics of the stat. Bundesamt ( in particular Figure 1 ) clearly shows the phenomenon that in the 1950s the divorce rate steadily declined, then since 1960-1975 slowly increased, then 1977/78 in the West and 1990-93 in the East a break with historical lows had. Furthermore, the increase in the 50 - year trend line is very low: The decline in the divorce rate in the 1950s was reversed only in the 1980s by the trend again. Thus economic and economic conditions seem to play a major role, but rather legal and political circumstances: The first slump coincided with the introduction of the new divorce law, the second with the reunification and thus the abolition of liberal divorce consequential legal norms of the FGB in favor of far-reaching consequences of divorce, of the Civil Code. From 1950-2005 the " proportion of divorces at all divorces " of just under 30 % has increased to about 38%, according to this graph, that is a very moderate average rate of increase.

However, recent statistics show partially again declining divorce rates. Factors that influence the rate of divorce among other things:

  • The existing legal situation, see also Marriage Law Family Law
  • Life expectancy
  • The degree of mobility and anonymity in a society
  • Social and individual norms
  • Economic factors that ensure or prevent the appropriate livelihood of those affected after a divorce. It takes in times of crisis, not only the divorce rate from, but also indicates an increased level of satisfaction in the existing partnerships on average.
