Dixie Gilmer

William Franklin "Dixie" Gilmer ( born June 7, 1901 in Mount Airy, Surry County, North Carolina, † June 9, 1954 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma ) was an American politician. Between 1949 and 1951 he represented the first electoral district of the state of Oklahoma in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Even in childhood Gilmer moved with his parents to Oklahoma, where he attended the public schools in Oklahoma City. Between 1911 and 1919 he was employed in the administration of the House of Representatives from Oklahoma. After studying law at the Law Faculty of the University of Oklahoma and his 1923 was admitted as a lawyer, he began to work in his new profession.

Politically Gilmer was a member of the Democratic Party, as their candidate, he was elected to the state House of Representatives. In 1929, he moved to Tulsa. From 1931 to 1933 he was deputy and 1936-1946 actual district attorney in Tulsa County. In 1946 Gilmer ran unsuccessfully for the office of Governor of Oklahoma.

In 1948, he was elected in the first district of Oklahoma in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he came into effect on January 3, 1949 in the footsteps of George B. Schwabe. But since he lost to Schwabe in the next elections in 1950, Dixie Gilmer was able to complete only one term in Congress until January 3, 1951. After the end of his time in Congress was Gilmer security officer of the state government of Oklahoma. This office he held until his death in June 1954.
