Diz Disley

Diz Disley ( born May 27, 1931 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, as William Charles Disley, † March 22, 2010 in London) was a Canadian guitarist of swing and cartoonist.

Life and work

Disley, who grew up in Wales and Yorkshire, studied at Leeds College of Art and worked as a cartoonist active (eg for the Spectator and Melody Maker). He was also from 1949 a member of the Yorkshire Jazz Band. After his military service, he went in 1953 to London, where he worked with George Melly and with Ken Colyer, Cy Laurie, Sandy Brown, Kenny Ball and Alex Welsh. His own ensemble were based since 1956 at Quintette du Hot Club de France. In the 1960s he worked as a radio host (even he said the first concert of the Beatles in London ) and it shifted its activities in the clubs of the folk scene: With Dave Swarbrick and Martin Carthy he played Rags on the guitar (Album Rags, Reels & airs, 1967). He also accompanied Sandy Denny ( Like an Old Fashioned Waltz ). In 1973, he contributed greatly to Stéphane Grappelli comeback and played in the following years regularly together with this and his trio. Created 13 shared albums between 1973 and 1983. With Biréli Lagrène he took in 1984 in Carnegie Hall. In 1986 he founded the Soho String Quintets with violinist Johnny Van Derrick and Nils Solberg, Jeff Green and bassist David Etheridge rhythm section (Album Zing Went the Strings).

In 1988 he was a nightclub in Almería ( Spain), before he worked as a draftsman for the studios of Walt Disney in California. Occasionally he went to continue, with Big Jay McNeely and about with Ray Campi. Then he returned to England, where he played traditional jazz.
