Djamal Amrani

Djamel Amrani ( born August 29, 1935 in Sour El- Ghozlane, Algeria; † 2 March 2005) was an Algerian writer and freedom fighter.

Life and work

1952 His family settled in Algiers. After finishing school in 1956 he took active part in student strike. During the Battle of Algiers in 1957, he was arrested and tortured. The members of his family were killed. After his release from prison, he was deported to France.

In his first book Le Temoin ( The witness ) report 1960 on torture in Algeria, later he produced a maghrebinisches program on French television. After his return he made poetry programs in the Algerian television.

In 2004 he received from the Chilean President Ricardo Lagos, the Pablo Neruda Medal.
