Dmitriyev (town)

Dmitriev - Lgowski (Russian Дмитриев - Льговский ) is a small town in Kursk Oblast (Russia) with 7728 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the southwestern edge of the middle Russian plate about 120 km northwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Kursk at the SWAPA, a right tributary of the Seim river system of the Dnieper.

Dmitriev - Lgowski is the administrative center of the Rajons Dmitriev.

History

For the old location at the SWAPA settlement Swapsk (founding date unknown ) became common until the 18th century, the name Dmitrowskoje after which Dimitrios of Thessaloniki, Russian Dmitri Solunski, consecrated church.

On May 23, 1779 town charter was granted as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ). The city received for better differentiation of the cities Dmitrov ( Moscow province ) and Dmitrovsk (not far in the government of Orel located ) the name Dmitriev at the SWAPA ( Dmitriev -na- swape ). Unofficially also popular shortening and re-interpretations of the name, as Dmitroslawsk, Dmitroslawl or Mitroslaw was used; even in official documents often lacked the suffix, such as those of the census of 1897.

In 1929 it was renamed the Dmitriev - Lgowski, when the city was temporarily the Rajon Lgow connected.

During World War II Dmitriev - Lgowski was occupied on 8 October 1941 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured on March 2, 1943 by troops of the Central Front of the Red Army during the advance towards Sevsk.

Culture and sights

The city has a local history museum, named after the born here Alexei Wangenheim (1881-1942), Meteorologist, founder and first head of the Soviet weather service.

Economy and infrastructure

In Dmitriev - Lgowski there is a work for forestry equipment and companies in the food industry.

The town lies on the railway line opened in 1897 Bryansk Lgow (1911 extended to Kharkiv ).

The A142 trunk road Trosna - Kalinowka ( cross-connection between M2 and M3 corresponds to European Route 391 ) heads north past the town.
