Dmitry Gulia

Dmitry Gulia Iosifovich ( Abkhaz Дырмит Иасыф - иҧа Гәлиа; Russian Дмитрий Иосифович Гулиа; * 9 Februarjul / February 21 1874greg in Tschartscha, Russian Empire, .. † 7 April 1960 Agudsera, Abkhaz ASSR ) was a Soviet- Abkhazian writers and poet. He is now one of the founders of modern Abkhaz literature.

Life and career

Dmitry Gulia was born Gatsch Gulia Abkhazian in Tschartscha at Gulrypsch, then still part of the Russian empire. His family was initially been out in the Ottoman Empire, as many Abkhaz families after the Russian conquest of the Caucasus. Gulias father, however, managed to return to Abkhazia. Gulia made ​​himself a teacher training in Gori.

Together with Konstantin Machavariani 1892 he developed a new Abkhazian alphabet based on the Cyrillic alphabet. 1912 Gulia published a first book of poems. In 1919 he wrote "Under foreign skies " the first novella in the Abkhazian language. In the 1920s, when Abkhazia now part of the Soviet Union, he was one of the editors of the journal Apsny, the first abchasischsprachigen newspaper. From 1922 to 1924 he taught Abkhaz language at the Tbilisi State University. In subsequent years, Gulia was a writer very active, followed by lyrical works such as "Song of Abkhazia " (1940 ) and " Autumn in the Village " (1946) and the novella " Kamatschitsch " ( 1940). He also wrote books about the Abkhaz language, culture and history.

In the 1950s, Gulia was sitting in the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, the Parliament of the Soviet Union. Gulia was also awarded the Order of Lenin. He died in 1960. His son Georgy Gulia was also a writer.
