Dmytro Chyzhevsky

Dmitry Tschižewskij (this notation he preferred himself, Russian Дмитрий Чижевский / Dmitry Tschižewskij, originally ukrainian Дмитро Чижевський / Dmytro Tschyschewskyj, also Dmytro Čyževs'kyj; * 23 Märzjul / April 4 1894greg in Alexandija, Russian Empire, .. † 18 April 1977 in Heidelberg, Germany ) was a German Slawist, philosopher and cultural theorist russian- Ukrainian origin.

Life

Tschižewskij first studied in St. Petersburg (1911-1913) and then in Kiev, where he graduated in 1918. In 1921 he emigrated to Germany, where he among other things Karl Jaspers and Martin Heidegger philosophy studied, from 1924 he was a lecturer at the Free Ukrainian University in Prague. In 1932 he became a lecturer in Ukrainian at the University of Halle and remained so until 1945. After the war he fled to Marburg, where he was a visiting professor until 1951, after which he taught until 1956 at the Harvard University. From 1956 on he was a professor of Slavic Studies at the Ruprecht -Karls- University of Heidelberg. He also taught as a visiting professor at the University of Cologne. After hours of statelessness, he participated in the German citizenship.

His work in the field of Slavic studies including a large number of works of literature and philosophy in Russia, Ukraine, and other Slav countries.

Dmitry Tschižewskij was buried on the Mount Cemetery ( Heidelberg).
