Gangnihessou was the first of the traditional "twelve kings of Dahomey " (Benin).

Gangnihessou should have reigned until 1620. His symbols were a male Gangnihessou Bird ( a rebus for his name), a drum and javelins. It is not entirely clear whether he really historically ruled as king or only an influential leader was. His successor and younger brother Dakodonu other hand, is clearly identifiable as king.
